My Philosophy of Health incorporates the concept of 'Vitalism'
Within any philosophy can be many interlinked principles and ideas.
The concept of Vitalism is one such component that guides me, in how I approach YOU
– you can read more about an introduction to a philosophy of health here.
It is often said that Vitalism as an idea has been ‘debunked’ by modern science – yet this is just a shrill claim by many within science who instead clutch to an opposing idea called ‘materialism’.
Vitalism suggests that there is some kind of field or intelligence that exists around and/or inside of you.
This field or intelligence organises you and works to keep you alive; it works to keep you in a state of growth and healing; it leads TOWARD more organisation (syntropy) – and it opposes nature’s typical forces that lead toward loss of organisation (disorganisation/chaos), and break-down (decay) into ‘smaller’ parts with an associated loss of ‘information’ (entropy).
It is this field which differentiates you from something inanimate or “dead”. It is this intelligence that ‘leaves’ us when we die!
This field is that personalised ‘something’ within you – some schools of thought see it as being derived from the greater ‘field’ of our universe.
Different schools have thought have different names for this intelligence.
Many years ago, it was called the elan vital (the vital force or impulse of life); some call it the ‘vital principle.’
Many physicists now refer to it as 'the field.'
Those with a more religious or spiritual persuasion might think of it as 'soul' or 'spirit.'
For Star Wars fans - it's 'the force!'
Keep in mind, that we can simplify this concept down.
As a vitalistic Chiropractor, my 'term' for this force is your 'Innate,' or 'Inborn Intelligence.'
In the context of OUR human lives, and our health, it is pretty easy to accept the simple and undeniable idea that our bodies (and mind) are self-healing, self-regulating and self-coordinating. These features of life happen without our conscious control or awareness.
These functions are ONLY at their best when our requirements for an ideal life are being met.
I argue that these features of life are your INNATE made manifest.
Chiropractors argue that health comes from within.
That Innate manifests life and health from Above-Down, and then Inside-Out.
As such healthcare needs to acknowledge and support this 'source' of health and wellbeing.
My role as a chiropractor is to help you harness or more fully express this intelligence, allowing you to function better
and optimise the healing, regulation and coordination innately occurring inside you. It is YOU that heals you, not us!
